“PAINT THE MUSIC” A Plein Air Invitational sponsored by the Laurie Hendricks Gallery in conjunction with the South Pasadena Eclectic Music Festival and Art Walk on May 6th

While musicians and singers will be performing on 15 stages around South Pasadena on Saturday, May 6th for the Eclectic Music Festival and Art Walk, there will be a dozen Plein Air painters scattered around the town capturing the scenes on canvas. The Laurie Hendricks Gallery has invited accomplished painters from around the area to “Paint the Music”! “We wanted to do something that would allow artists to react to, and be inspired by the music of the Eclectic Festival, and have the music influence what they paint,” states Gallery owner Laurie Hendricks. “A few weeks ago I was invited to paint at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion before and during a performance of ‘Tales of Hoffman’ by the L.A. Opera. It was quite an experience, there were several models in costume in the lobby posing and when the opera started we could hear the singing while we were painting. I was very inspired and it gave me the idea to have local Plein Air artists come to the Eclectic Music Festival and have their own experience with painting the music.”

The artists will spread out around town starting at 1 PM, and will bring their finished paintings to the Laurie Hendricks Gallery at 5:30 PM to be displayed. The paintings will be hung and the judges will award prizes to the best paintings. From 7 PM to 9 PM there will be an artist’s reception, and at 7:30 PM there will be an awards ceremony at the Gallery, located at 1504 Mission Street. The head judge is local artist Sunny Apinchapong, a signature member of the California Art Club and member of Oil Painters of America. Sunny is an accomplished artist who worked for Walt Disney Studios before pursuing a life in Fine Arts. He was Russian painter Sergei Bongart’s assistant and now teaches classes at his studio. He will be assisted by two South Pasadena residents.

Music for the reception will be provided by Cynthia Brando, a performing singer songwriter here in Los Angeles. Earlier in the day, Ms. Brando will be posing for some of the artists at one of the music venues. Chamber of Commerce director Laurie Wheeler stated, “This is such an exciting way to add more art to the Eclectic!” The participating artists are Kich Ma, Scott Deinhart, Lynda Pyka, Anette Power, Siri France, Laurie Hendricks, Pati Bruce, Cynthia Thiel, Joel Heger, Justine Parish, Anna T. Kelly, Sherry Schmidt, and Jason Situ. The artists will have one painting they have already completed that will hang in the “Paint the Music” show, along with their freshly completed works, and the paintings will hang in the Gallery until June 3rd. Everyone is invited to the reception and a portion of all sales will be donated to Eclectic Friends of The Arts, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that works to help keep The Eclectic free.

“Paint the Music” continues at the Laurie Hendricks Gallery through June 3rd. The Laurie Hendricks Gallery is located at 1504 Mission Street in South Pasadena and is open from Wednesday through Saturday from 11 AM until 5 PM, or by appointment.
